Durand is located in Shiawassee County on I-69 approximately thirteen miles west of I-75. It is nestled between the two metropolitan cities of Flint and Lansing.

Durand holds on to its small town rural/agricultural roots and is proud of its rich heritage as the Railroad City. The quaint city is home of the magnificent historical Durand Union Railroad Station which houses the Michigan State Railroad History Museum. Still active as an Amtrak passenger station, it operates two trains daily from Port Huron to Chicago. National Geographic cites Durand Union Station as one of the most photographed depots in the U.S.A.

Durand Area Schools includes the governmental units of Durand, Bancroft and Lennon, as well as the townships of Vernon, Clayton Gains, Antrim, Burns and Venice.
